Things To Do While Waiting for Decisions, Part II
Things To Do While Waiting for Decisions, Part II So I just read Bens post regarding the official release date of early action decisions. SIX DAYS! Six days! Man, thats a short time. When I was your age, we didnt have any official release date to count down to because they came in the mail. In tubes. We also walked six miles to school every day, uphill. Both ways. Anyway, I was thinking we could all be scared together because in six days, Ill be six days closer to finals. And that kinda blows because nobody likes finals. (Thus, in lieu of studying, Im sitting on The Angela Monsters bed with May and Liz 11 and talking about what to blog about.) Also, nobody likes the suspense of big life decisions, but I can suggest a couple things to ease the pain. Its the big sequel to last years Things To Do While Waiting For Decisions: Things To Do While Waiting for Decisions, Part II! 1. Consider majoring in completely random majors that lend themselves to terrible puns. (Like statistics. Statistically speaking, its a very unpopular major. -Liz 11) 2. Think up really horrible names for this sequel list. (Return of the Blog?) 3. Get in the kitchen with your mom and dont leave until youve learned her secrets. (I REGRET NOT DOING THIS SO MUCH. I miss Korean food like I miss my own bed. Also, youll get to spend quality time with your mom and THAT is something you should not take for granted. Your parents gave so much to make you into the fascinating person you are dont deprive them of the pleasure of getting to hang out with you.) 4. Campaign to save Mr. Splashy Pants. (You named him, now save him.) 5. Celebrate the last two days of your favorite Jewish holiday with people you love. (I spent the earlier part of the evening on Burton Two- sometimes affectionately called Burton Jew for its Jewish residents eating latkes. I almost cut off my ring finger dicing onions.) 6. Work out a lot, and then count the number of days left on the number of pectoral abdominal (SORRY.. my mistake. I suck. Thanks to those who pointed it out to me) muscles you have. (Worst joke ever. Sorry. Wish I had a six pack.) 7. Thank everyone who made it possible for you to get to this point. (Do it now, before you find out what happens. It makes the gesture more genuine even though its genuine either way and your teachers and parents deserve it. Yeah, this was on the list last year, but its important, okay?) 8. Play Funny Farm. (Itll probably take you over six days since I (and several people on my floor) have been working on it for almost two weeks now and am STILL working on the meta puzzle, but its an incredibly addictive game and Im going to try to beat it tonight before finals really set in. Anyone know an eight-letter word having to do with the location of M*A*S*H?) 9. Be productive and start working on more applications. (You probably already have, and nobody wants to hear this stuff but with big decisions like these, its absolutely crucial not to invest all your hopes into one place. Especially because theres no way you can know how a school will fit you and force you to grow until after youve been there for some time.) 10. Relax. Relax. Relax. Relllaaaxxxxx. (I cant relax! Who IS this girl, and why does SHE think she can tell me to relax?? Uh, because I was you two years ago, and I absolutely know what its like to be stressed to your very core about whats going to happen. I know nothing I say will really truly be convincing, but its my advice to you. Turn up Mikas Relax, dance around in your underwear, and relax. Whatever happens will happen, and at this point theres nothing you can do to change it. Mika says relax. Take it eeee-aaaa-sy.) On another note I apologize for being slightly MIA for the past week or so! This weekend was our fall dance show, which left me incredibly exhausted. But Im back, and Ill definitely post some pictures from Dance Troupe shortly, as well as write about majors (this post is long overdue, I know). In the mean time, if you can think of any other topics youd like me to focus on, let me know. And with that, I hope your waiting goes well, and that you escape the next six days with your sanity!

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald - 1001 Words
Nick Carrawayââ¬â¢s personality is slowly revealed itself throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby. This occurs through certain events throughout his journey, if you will, and how he is influenced when he befriends Jay Gatsby: a wealthy young man who lives in a mansion next door to Nick in West Egg. Nick is both a character in the novel and the narrator. He is usually behind the scenes during confrontations between other characters, yet he is the one who brings these characters together through multiple occurrences. For example, when Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan meet for the first time, in Nicks house, after Gatsby returns to win her heart back. A term to describe him as a narrator is a ââ¬Å"peripheral narratorâ⬠. He is like an outsider, who isnââ¬â¢t irrelevant or the center of attention. He also prefers to ââ¬Å"reserve all judgmentsâ⬠(Fitzgerald 1), as he says in the first page of chapter one. This is because he likes to listen to the stories of the characters h e meets, and since he refrains from judging before knowing the person, it allows him to judge accordingly to the characters and their stories. This allows Nick to adapt to his surroundings and act accordingly since he is almost like a foreign since he is new to living life in New York City. Nick comes off as a character who is much more distant as well as more practical and down to earth than the other characters. Early on in the novel, the reader knows that he/she can trust Nick as a narrator because of his first impression. TrustShow MoreRelatedThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald1393 Words à |à 6 PagesF. Biblical and secular perspectives on the causes of dysfunctional turnover Free Essays
Biblical and secular perspectives cause a dysfunctional turnover in business. A dysfunctional turn over refers to the kind of turnover where good performers leave the company. Many employees and especially high performers will leave their work or positions if their sincerely held religious believes practices and observances requested are not adhered to by the company managers. We will write a custom essay sample on Biblical and secular perspectives on the causes of dysfunctional turnover or any similar topic only for you Order Now Religious observances include praying, attending worship services, displaying of religious objects wearing of religious symbols and adhering to specific dietary rules. Determining whether a kind of practices is biblical or religious does not depend on the nature of a particular activity but on the motivation of the employee. This same practice might be engaged in by one person for biblical purposes and another person for specifically secular reasons. For example an employee might observe specific dietary restrictions for religious reasons while another employee will adhere to the very same dietary restrictions just for secular reasons. This might call for a reasonable accommodation if it is just for religious reason. Many employees do not feel good when their secular or religious believes are assumed by their employers and they will therefore end up leaving the work place. For example according to Christianity the bible says that every seventh day is a Sabbath day and therefore every one should rest. Someof the Christian employees hold this biblical saying with a lot of regard and therefore if an employer disregards this day then they may quit their jobs for no other reasons other than that. Dysfunctional turn over is also facilitated by secular reasons. For example some of the employers will want to have increased salaries, holidays, promotions nay many other worldly things. If the employee fails to provide this then many employees will end up quitting jobs. Secular employees are very hardworking and committed to their careers and puts God aside from their job. There are various strategies for increasing the retention of high performers. One of the strategies is the hiring of the right person. This is because the correct candidates are quickly in adopting the strategy referred to as ââ¬Å"train for skill hire for fitâ⬠. The other strategy is integration for success. This is because turnover can be brought down by the implementation of a thorough and well orientation program. The other strategy is phase training. This can be achieved if employees are provided with basic training at the outset but as the employees build time and experience with the company then further training can be offered according to the recognition of their growth. The other strategy is the provision of growth opportunities. This is because the more the employees feel that they have the ability to grow and even become more marketable then the more they are likely to stay. Nowadays employees are taking ownership of their carriers by recognizing the need to continuously upgrade and refine their skills. Employers who offer easily accessible and relevant kind of training tends to have a declined turnover. The other strategy is the alignment of aspirations with contributions. This can be achieved through the matching of interests and skills of the employees and their respective work assignments. This can be possible only if the employers provide an environment where employees have the capacity to make necessary adjustments so that they can be effectively aligned with what the company needs them to do and what they are talented and what they find to be enjoyable. The other strategy is the motivation of the troops; this can be done through the assessment of the underlying motivators for work beyond the paycheck or salary. The main factor in the motivation of employees is through the creation of the sense of affiliation within the company. This creates a two way kind of relationship based on the meeting of the mutual needs. Employees must be motivated to feel the sense of their purpose in the organization. The other strategy is the making of the rewards count. This strategy can be achieved through making all the employee rewards immediate, appropriate and personal. For instant employees find the receiving of a bonus check at the end of the year less or smaller compared to frequent payouts. The other strategy is the enlistment of problem solvers. This strategy can be achieved if and the employers invite the employees when solving the company problems. This is because a shared problem approach creates a deep ownership for employees in the companyââ¬â¢s triumph. Many companies with formal retention and succession plans tend to show low costs per new hire and also lower cost of separation per employee. This helps the human resource professionals in validation the retention costsuch as expensive benefits package which are vital to successful employee retention. High performing employees are always concentration on their work if they are given proper treatment and this leads to increased performance at work and reduced cost of production thus resulting into increased return on investment (Gardner, 1). How to cite Biblical and secular perspectives on the causes of dysfunctional turnover, Papers

Pros And Cons Of Gay Marriage Essay Example For Students
Pros And Cons Of Gay Marriage Essay Gay MarriageThere seem to be Specific time in history where certain issues define the culture tension in a society. They become representative of large worldview and clearly emphasize the battle between divergent moral and spiritual perspectives. Homosexual marriage in the United States is one of these issues. In the past five years, there have been various threats and debates about the possibility of legalizing homosexual union. The issue took centre stage in February largely. The U.S Senate quashes a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gays from marrying. President Bush and other same-sex marriage opponents say they will try again. Most of Americans are against same-sex marriage because how the nation would change if gay were allowed to marry. Gay marriage could affects on American society in many different ways. 1.Polygamy. 2.Federal spending. 3.Religious speech. 4.Children. 5.Civil Rights. First, it is more likely to lead to polygamy. For instance, says legalizing same-sex marriage will open the floodgates to polygamy. The more government moves towards sanctioning homosexual relationships, the less right it has to prevent plural marriage. The idea that same-sex marriage could lead to polygamy is Not beyond the bounds of reality, although incredibly unlikely, said Michael Allen who teaches constitutional law at Stetson university college of law in Gulf port. We do not see that is as a realistic view. For instance, it is highly doubtful that solemnizing the union of accepting adults, equal in power in their relationships, would lead to acceptance of polygamous unions, which have, throughout most of history in those societies that have accepted them. If one man can marry anther man, you need to ask then, what is it that you doing by prohibiting one man from marrying two women? Whats the evil that you are tying to prevent? If same sex marriage is legalized there is no natu ral stopping point in redefining what is or is not acceptable. It would take much longer to legalize polygamy then gay marriage because it is more socially taboo. That is the reason that polygamists would get away with trying to take credit on same sex marriage (Attorney John Bucher). Second, gay marriage will affect on the Federal Spending. According to news reports, the costs of same sex marriage, he referred to on August 2003 report from the nonpartisan congressional budget office that said the federal government would have to spend about $ 1.4- billion during 10 years to extend benefits to domestic partners and retirees. The budget study for the possible impact of same sex marriage that the office crunched numbers from census figures and other reports to estimate income taxes, Social Security, health care benefits and other federal programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and food stamps. The government would pay more benefits in areas such as social security. Third, gay marriage is against Religious Speech. Some religious leaders think it could become more difficult legally to lecture against homosexuality if the nation were to support same sex marriage as a fundamental right. The argument has spread, reaching Christian television shows and church pulpits. Major religious organizations have issued warnings, including concerned women for America, focus on the family and the liberty counsel, and Orlando based group that has become a national leader in the fight against same- sex marriage. A woman who married her lesbian partner in Massachusetts was banned from teaching in the church of Christ, Scientist after she refused to repent for her actions. A church letter sent to Kathleen Clement son said she had abused her role as a teacher and could teach spiritual healing again only if she repented and served a three- years probation. I dont feel I have anything to repent for more than anyone else, she told The News Press of Fort Myers. Christian Scientists consider prayer as the primary source of mental and physical healing, and clement son was a well- known church practitioner and lecturer. For 10 years, she taught two classes on spiritual healing that is the first step toward being a church practitioner. The churchs letter to clement son also said that her former students are now considered to have had no primary is instruction, and they can no longer present their practitioner services in the Christian Science Journal, or take annual refresher courses. Few people will be seriously affected by the boards decision, clement son said. Forth, gar marriage affects on children. Among the most highly debated issues surrounding gay marriage is parenting how are families and kids who live in same sex households affected? The scientific evidence is clear, it says. Research during the past three decades says that children raised by gay parents were more likely to consider homosexual relationships. Still, the majority of all children identify themselves as heterosexuals, the sociologists noted. Children of ay parents were more likely to play with toys outside of their rationale gender roles and were less constrained by gender in their dress and their goals. For instance, girls raised by lesbians were more likely to be lawyers, doctors and astronauts. They were also more a sexually adventurous. Boys raised by lesbians, on the other hand, were chaster than their peers were in heterosexual household. People who are against same sex marriage have also embraced their findings, holding them up as proof that gay parenting is not ideal for children. Articles on websites for the family research council and concerned women for America refer to the study. Concerned womens LaRue said other studies have concluded that homes with mothers and fathers are best. Finally, gays claim that they have to have their civil rights. The idea that same sex marriage is a civil rights issue, similar to African Americans gaining the right to sit at lunch count ers and to vote, is highly debatable among those for and against legalizing gay marriage. To call this civil rights issue is untruthful and it also demeans the civil rights struggle of African Americans, said LaRue of concerned women for America. She said race is an undeniable point that cant be changed. She believes that homosexual marriage can be converted. John Lewis, D-Ga; who marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr, said the proposed Marriage protection Act was a step backward in civil rights. Those of us who came through the civil rights movement saw the federal courts as a sympathetic referee. If it had not been for the federal courts, where would we be? If it had not been for the supreme court of 1954, there would still be legalized segregation in America to vote for this legislation would be like members of congress trying to stand in the courthouse door, just like Government. Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door to stop the integration of Alabama schools today it is gay m arriage, tomorrow it will be something else. In conclusion, it seems that the basic problem facing the problem is the limits between a right and privilege. The problem with an issue like marriage is that it is neither a right nor a privilege. In its simplest form a marriage is a union between consenting souls to share assets, responsibility, and form a Unit. We have the right to life, liberty, and a pursuit of happiness, we do not; but it is a system that not only works well but has also been established as our system of laws. So the idea about gay marriage should be banned.
